Breast Implant Surgery

Implant Placement
During breast implant surgery, the implant can be placed over or under the breast muscle. Each option carries its own benefits, depending on the patient's preferences and needs regarding pain, downtime, and final results.

Over the Muscle
Many San Francisco breast implant surgery patients prefer placement over the muscle. This keeps the actual operating closer to the breast's surface, which generally leads to a shorter surgery and recovery time. Pain is often minimal as well, since the muscle is left alone during surgery. However, the implant being placed over the muscle means that it will remain near the surface of the breast. As mentioned, this is can be a benefit to the operation process, but may negatively effect the results, as any of the implant's imperfections and ripples may be visible.

Under the Muscle
Other San Francisco breast implant surgery patients prefer to have the implants inserted under the muscle. In this situation, the results usually look more natural since there is more original tissue between the breast's surface and the implant. In contrast to placement over the muscle, however, inserting the implant under the muscle requires that the surgeon delve deeper below the surface of the breast. This can translate to a longer and less comfortable surgery and recovery period.

Every patient is unique, so there isn't any one "right" option when it comes to breast implant placement. You will have the opportunity to discuss your options in depth during an initial consultation. Your breast implant surgeon will educate you on your choices, helping you weigh them to determine which is most appropriate for you.
