About Breast Implants
Silicone was traditionally the material of choice for breast
implants. However, in 1992, after some reports of complications
allegedly linked to silicone, the FDA banned silicone implants
from use in most breast implant surgeries.
Since then, saline implants, filled with a safe salt water solution,
have been the breast implant of choice.
Silicone has also been used since then, but only in unique circumstances.
Medical professionals, and breast implant patients, have their
doubts about saline as well. Not for safety reasons, but more
so in relation to the results they produce. Silicone tends to
lead to a more natural final appearance, but this can of course vary between patients.
Many people in the plastic surgery industry are investigating
the differences between the materials used to make a breast implant.
San Francisco's surgeons, as with the medical community, are
respecting the research, and awaiting a verdict. It will likely
be some time, however, before any concrete answers and decisions
are settled upon.
